Through the celebration of cruelty masquerading as virtue. The members of the master slave morality require modes of expression for the cruelty which then keeps them trapped in the morality.
Thanks really enjoyed this. IMO (from a guy who's read a few books on psychology) much of what you talked about is relevant to Milgrams Experiment. Covid is very like the experiment he did where people gave electric shocks to unseen people in another room. The percentages seem to correlate very well.
As for how to get people to listen, I believe, is by something you have done very effectively already with your kids on climate change. You didn't preach, a person has to make up their own mind. You used a series of non confrontational questions that made them want to find out for themselves. I think questions are the answer but they have to be the right questions for each topic. When youre asked a question, you have to answer it, at least in your own head. Alas I seem to be very poor at choosing the right questions.
Me too. I think the right questions will come naturally from undertaking a personal study. But the problem is that this takes time, the facts are well buried. Also, since we can predict that 65% of people are very happy to cite someone else's opinion as their 'evidence', be prepared to gently unpeel this for them.
Thank you for this, and congratulations on the first publication by TTC! - an intriguing and vitally important topic discussed by David Carter and Professor Mattias Desmet. It sparked many thoughts for me and, in the spirit of opening debate and discussion, I wanted to summarise the main points I disagreed with or thought could be emphasised more. I understand there might not be many people engaged here yet, but if anyone feels like discussing points raised, please do!
There is an assertion that when propaganda is encountered, possibly harmful propaganda, maybe 70% of people don’t believe it but also don’t challenge it, perhaps for fear of reprisals. I think most of the 70% just have not made their mind up yet, and therefore find it easier to follow the crowd. Until a few years ago I was in this category on most issues and I am hoping The Truth Contract will help me explore more issues impartially.
Why don't I speak up more loudly on issues i am confident on? It is true I feel I have to be careful who I speak to and how I speak - I don't want to be 'cancelled! Possibly cancellation is a natural and healthy phenomenon in society, but I don't think this is the whole story. There do seem to be quiet forces working in sophisticated and calculated ways, playing on our fears, ego, suggestibility, and passivity, to prevent us from hearing and speaking the truth.
The antidote, according to Professor Desmet, is ‘sincere speech.’ This is such a wonderful idea, and I agree with it, that when someone speaks from their heart, from all of themselves, then it resonates with the heart/whole person of the receiver. This has indeed been a guiding light for me over many years.
And so what? - what is at stake here? The proposition is that we in the UK are forced to accept a substantially lower quality of life - less money (taxation, inflation), less personal freedom (censorship, movement limits, drug mandates, lock-downs, digital money), more societal tension and unrest (family unit weakening, unbalanced immigration), and more.. – all in order to avoid the supposed harmful effects of pandemics, climate change, inequality, hate/violence, war, persecution, etc. But there are so many questions and unknowns concerning the nature and scale of costs involved, (human cost and £cost), and whether those costs are justified given there are serious disagreements over the likelihood and impact of the risks cited. And are there alternative motives here? Why is it that a few people can own so much money and influence, whilst the vast majority of us are getting poorer and can do little about it?
So, we NEED to debate, people, and make our minds up properly on the issues, and then come out and voice and test our position, whatever it is, in a friendly and positive way. We should not feel a need to convert our friends to a point-of-view. Rather, together we boldly and honestly explore what is True. There is no need to stoop to name-calling or cancel-culture. We just need to form and then reconcile our points of view, by talking and listening sincerely.
